'Only the Lonely' is a collection of three large paintings describing the struggles of isolation felt by the individuals in Amador County. Most Amador County residents reside in rural settings, facing challenges related to isolation. Those who identify as part of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities or are new to the county often grapple with these issues even more acutely, feeling unseen in this community. By encountering this artwork and engaging with the narratives behind the paintings, other residents will find validation for their feelings. Witnessing the work will reassure them they are not alone in their experiences. These paintings were supported through funds from the Amador County Arts Council, a state partner of the California Arts Council. They were displayed during community events, including the 'Heart of Hope' art show curated by Amador Arts and produced in partnership with the Amador County Department of Behavioral Health and the Amador Suicide Prevention Coalition ("Amador SPEAK").

The three paintings explore themes of isolation, loneliness, mental health, loss of loved ones, and drug addiction. Isolation, trauma, and the absence of community have tangible effects on our well-being. The style of each painting is graphic, with vivid colors in an attempt to mimic childlike wonder. This is a metaphor for the innocence and ignorance our society experiences when faced with these topics of human experience, often considered unsightly. Through bright and powerful visuals, I challenge that notion and bring our discomfort into a more open atmosphere so we may directly engage with it. Numerous individuals in the Amador community have expressed feeling unsafe and unseen. "Only the Lonely" aims to amplify these voices by attempting to represent them through figures, symbolism, and mythos. My work and efforts to share my experiences will provide a sense of belonging, visibility, and relatability for those who engage with it.
