ILLUSTRATION // PHOTOGRAPHY
THE SCROLLS
In 2012 I began working on a type of illustration that could encapsulate the mythic nature of the personas associated with the performance project, Bushwa Hawkers. I combined my understanding of anatomy and gesture with indexical signs to reference different Americana myth and folk-lore, encapsulating the characters I had created into the context of historical storytelling. Using butcher paper to create a scale of human portraiture a foot or so larger than realistic proportions, the size of the subject matter acts as a signifier to the archetypal nature of the characters.
Since the completion of the first series, I have expanded the subject matter to significant characters I come across during my studies of American myth. The characters portrayed vary from characters referenced in New Mexican ghost-stories such as skin walkers, to Pretty Polly, to Robin Williams. The ongoing project is significant to my artistic process because it enables me to be in consistent dialogues with the subconscious process of myth-making in Americana culture.
